I am proud to say that I have been with the Dutchess County Animal Hospital here in Poughkeepsie & Dutchess County, N.Y. for 6 and a half years now. What we pride ourselves on is Dr. Cannan and our staff stays on the cutting edge of technology. Whether that is laser therapy treatment, digital radiographs, dentistry, or something as simple as our scheduling and computer system, Dr. Cannan requires every staff member to participate in Continuing Education each year, many of whom go above and beyond the required amount. Dr. Cannan herself also keeps current by participating in classes, conferences, continuing education, and receiving the most current Veterinary Medicine magazines that she reviews in her spare time and passes on to her staff.
During my years here, one of the things that I have noticed is the hesitation from our Pet Parents to schedule surgeries, particularly men hesitant to schedule neutering for their male dogs. Now, this may be because they are genuinely concerned of the complications of surgery but more often than not, I’ve had the men complain about taking away their “manhood”. I’ve even had some men ask about putting in prosthetic testicles. This is not something that this practice participates with but not a completely unheard of request. Now, remember how at the beginning of this blog I was talking about how cutting edge our practice is? I am not telling you this to toot our own horn but to tell you that we are excited and proud to announce that in-line with the most current in Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Cannan will soon be offering Zinc Neutering, also known as Zeutering, to male dogs between the ages of 4 and 10 months. Zeutering is a non-surgical option of sterilization that can be done in a shorter amount of time without a scalpel and allows dogs to keep the look of testicles and retain up to 50% of testosterone. Testosterone has demonstrated to play a critical role in the health of dogs. A hormone that supports metabolism, muscle tone, and can reduce the chance of certain cancers, among other benefits. Zeutering is done thru a simple process that takes only a few minutes – an all-natural mixture of Zinc Gluconate, L-Arginine, and Purified Water is injected into each testicle while the dog is under a mild sedative to make him more comfortable. Because the dog will look in-tact, a small “Z” is tattooed on their inner groin area to show they are Zeutered. As with any injection or procedure, there are risks and benefits that need to be considered. For your information, we have included the following You Tube Video of an actual Zeutering Procedure in addition to an attached brochure and Client Information Handout. If you have any questions or are interested in finding out more information about the Zeutering process or to schedule an appointment, please call us at (845) 452-1316. We are holding a Zeutering clinic on May 22nd. The cost will be only $80 for this clinic only; $40 of which will go to a donation to a rescue organization and the other $40 to go towards the cost of supplies. Space is limited so please call and book an appointment now with your vet here in Poughkeepsie & Dutchess County, N.Y.!
